Safe Harbor Easton is an emergency homeless shelter housed in a two story building at 536 N. Bushkill Drive in Easton, Pa. It has the capacity to house 22 men and 12 women overnight. Safe Harbor offers safe, clean accommodations for homeless single men and women and the building is handicapped-accessible. Shelter residents are permitted to stay for up to 120 days, while residents and staff work together to deal with the problems that led to the client's homelessness. Residents work toward self-sufficiency, participate in self help programs, prepare for the future and address the issues that led them to seek shelter.
The shelter is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The Executive Director, Caseworker, Administrative Assistant, and Program Aides are available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. House Managers are on duty at all times and 24-hour on-call staff is available. Residents are also provided with case management services to develop a support plan including specific goals for gaining housing and independence.
At Safe Harbor Easton, low-income members of the community can also participate in a day program on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They can take advantage of a number of helpful basic services, including breakfast and lunch and homeless prevention case management services. Along with providing refuge from the streets, the program facilitates self-sufficiency and empowers people with the skills for daily living.
Easton Recovery Center
Recovery Center clients enter and exit through the front door while Safe Harbor shelter residents and daytime program participants use the back door of the building. Services will be available to members of the community who are struggling with addiction as well as to those in the shelter and daytime programs who are working toward recovery. Program participants do not need a referral.
While the Recovery Center is not a treatment program and does not provide treatment or counseling, the staff is prepared to help people find the treatment program and/or services right for their needs. The Center will have an assortment of materials available on recovery for people seeking to begin treatment. In addition, computers, internet and telephone are available for program participants to use for medical assistance applications, job applications, resumes, letter writing, housing applications and other recovery related services.
Safe Harbor Employment Services
In January 2013 Safe Harbor launched a program called Safe Harbor Employment Services, which is an employment program that is designed to match former and current residents with job opportunities through relationships that we have built over the years with local employers in Easton, Phillipsburg, NJ, and the surrounding Lehigh Valley. Safe Harbor serves as the middle man between pooling the talents of the residents of Safe Harbor and the job needs of the employer. Safe Harbor acts as the temp service without the fee.
Companies and individuals that are hiring are welcome to interview all employees at Safe Harbor. Safe Harbor is currently employing a part-time Employment Specialist that can also transport residents to an employer for an interview, she can also advocate for both the individual and Safe Harbor Employment Services. Safe Harbor performed a test run of Safe Harbor Employment Services for 8 months (March-October 2012) and in that time period we found over 60 jobs for residents of Safe Harbor and the Day-time Drop in Program.
Safe Harbor Employment Services is currently available for all residents of the shelter, day-time program participants, and select members of the Easton community. Safe Harbor would like to eventually open the program to the entire community but I would need to have a full time Employment Specialist for that. The program is currently funded through donations so in order to sustain the program I need to continue to solicit funds for the future.
Safe Harbor Employment Services is a cutting-edge concept that works, the more people that can be impacted by this program the better. Employment services publishes a weekly employment sheet with local opportunities for job seekers. We also have an employment group that meets every Thursday from 11-12 p.m. at The Easton Recovery Center located at 536 Bushkill Drive Easton, PA 18042 on the second floor of the Safe Harbor building.
